Getting the Most Out of Portfolio Chat

How to use Luum's AI Portfolio Chat effectively — example prompts, how answers are consumed, and what the AI can and cannot answer.

Portfolio Chat is an AI assistant that has read-access to your portfolio data and can answer questions about your holdings, performance, risk, and strategy in plain language. This guide explains how to use it effectively.

Not investment advice. Portfolio Chat is an analytical and educational tool. Nothing it produces constitutes personalised investment advice, a suitability assessment, or a trade directive. Always consult a qualified financial advisor before making investment decisions.

Accessing Portfolio Chat

Portfolio Chat is available on the Wealth tier (and during your 30-day free trial). Click the Chat icon in the sidebar or the chat button on any portfolio page.

What the AI knows about your portfolio

When you start a chat session, the AI has access to:

  • Your current holdings, quantities, and market values
  • Unrealised gain/loss per position
  • Asset allocation breakdown (sector, geography, account type)
  • Time-weighted returns over standard periods
  • Ticker Scores for your holdings
  • Your stated risk tolerance and primary investment goal

The AI does not have access to your tax records, ACB figures, contribution room, or transaction history by default. If you want to discuss those, open the Tax Centre directly.

Example prompts that work well

  • “Which of my holdings has the highest concentration risk?”
  • “How is my portfolio positioned relative to my retirement goal?”
  • “What sectors am I most exposed to through my ETFs?”
  • “Explain my current benchmark gap — why am I underperforming the TSX?”
  • “Which of my holdings have the lowest Ticker Scores right now?”
  • “What would happen to my portfolio if interest rates rise?”
  • “Summarise my portfolio performance in plain English.”

What Portfolio Chat cannot do

  • Execute trades. Luum is a read-only analytics platform. The chat cannot place orders or interact with your brokerage.
  • Give personalised investment advice. The AI will not tell you to buy or sell a specific security. It can explain your allocation and flag risks, but not make a personalised recommendation.
  • Use streaming prices during a chat. Prices used in a session are the last synced values, refreshed every few minutes rather than streamed tick by tick.
  • Remember previous sessions. Each chat session starts fresh. Your portfolio data is always loaded, but previous conversation history is not.

Answer consumption

Each Portfolio Chat message consumes answers based on the response depth selected:

  • Fast — 1 answer. Good for quick questions about a single holding or a simple calculation.
  • Standard — 3 answers. The default. Provides a thorough, reasoned response for most questions.

The answer cost is shown before the response generates. You can cancel before confirming without losing answers.

Tips for better answers

  • Be specific.“Explain my tech concentration” works better than “tell me about my portfolio.”
  • **Provide context.**If you have a specific scenario in mind (“I'm planning to retire in 15 years with $60,000/year income needs”), include it in your prompt.
  • Ask follow-up questions. Within a session you can build on previous answers — the AI retains the context of your conversation.
