Connecting and Managing Brokerage Accounts
Step-by-step guide to connecting a brokerage to Luum, managing multiple connections, handling token expiry, and removing a connection.
This guide walks you through connecting a brokerage account to Luum, managing multiple connections, handling an expired token, and removing a connection when needed.
Investor tier required. Brokerage connections require the Investor or Wealth subscription tier. During your 30-day free trial you have full access. The Starter tier includes a demo portfolio but no live brokerage sync.
Connecting your first brokerage
- In the sidebar, click Portfolios, then Add portfolio.
- Choose Connect brokerage account.
- Select your broker from the list. If your broker is not listed, it is not currently supported via Snaptrade.
- You will be redirected to a Snaptrade-hosted OAuth consent page. Authenticate with your broker credentials (these are never seen by or stored in Luum).
- Grant read-only access. Luum never requests trading permissions.
- You will be redirected back to Luum. The initial sync starts automatically and typically completes within 1–2 minutes.
What happens during the initial sync
Luum pulls up to 24 months of transaction history from your brokerage (subject to what the broker makes available). Positions, ACB, and — for registered accounts — contribution room are calculated from this transaction history. While the sync is running, your portfolio will show a loading state. You can navigate away and return; the sync continues in the background.
Connecting accounts at multiple brokerages
You can connect accounts at as many brokerages as you like on the Investor and Wealth tiers. Each connection creates a separate portfolio entry in Luum. Your dashboard aggregates all connected portfolios into a single net worth and allocation view.
To add another connection, repeat the same process: go to Portfolios → Add portfolio → Connect brokerage account.
Handling an expired connection
Brokerage OAuth tokens expire periodically (typically every 90 days, though this varies by broker). When a connection expires, Luum will display a warning banner and stop syncing that portfolio. To reconnect:
- Go to Settings → Connections.
- Find the expired connection (it will be marked with a warning icon).
- Click Reconnect and complete the OAuth flow again with your broker.
Reconnecting does not delete your existing transaction history or ACB calculations. Luum resumes syncing from where it left off.
Removing a connection
To remove a brokerage connection entirely:
- Go to Settings → Connections.
- Click the three-dot menu next to the connection and select Remove.
- Confirm the removal. This revokes the Snaptrade token and deletes the associated portfolio and all its transaction history from Luum.
Irreversible. Removing a connection permanently deletes all transaction history, ACB data, and capital gains records for that portfolio. This cannot be undone without reconnecting and re-syncing.
