AI answer allowance and top-ups

What each AI operation costs in answers, how many the Wealth plan includes, how carry-over works, and what the top-up bundles cost.

AI features are metered in answers. This page is the reference for how many you get, what each operation costs, and what happens when you run out.

For how the assistant actually produces an answer, see How AI answers work.

What the Wealth plan includes

Wealth subscribers get 64 AI answers per month. The allowance is granted at the start of each billing month.

AI features are Wealth-only. Starter and Investor subscribers do not have access to Portfolio Chat, the AI Strategy page, or IPO analysis.

AI answers are a Wealth feature. They are not included on Starter or Investor, and the free Starter tier carries no AI allowance at all. AI is the one cost that scales with how much an account is used rather than with how long it exists, which is why it sits behind the top subscription rather than being sampled.

What each operation costs

Every AI operation costs exactly one answer, Portfolio Chat, each strategy summary and card, IPO analysis, and Insight explanations alike. The price does not vary with how long your question is, how long the reply is, or how much work the answer took.

One consequence worth knowing: an operation that produces several sections, such as a Strategy refresh, costs one answer per section it generates. A section that does not have enough data to analyse costs nothing.

The cost is shown before you confirm an AI action, so nothing is spent without you seeing the price first.

Carry-over

Unused answers do carry over to the next month, up to a maximum of one month's allowance. So a Wealth subscriber can start a month with at most 128 answers. This month's allowance plus a full month carried over, and anything above that ceiling is not carried.

Answers do not expire while your subscription is active. Cancelling ends access to AI features, and to the balance with it.

Top-up bundles

If you need more before your next renewal, bundles are available from Settings → Billing:

Price (CAD) Answers
$5 about 17 answers
$15 about 67 answers
$35 about 167 answers

All prices are in Canadian dollars, like every other price in Luum.

How these prices are set. A top-up is priced to pass through what the answers cost to run, plus payment processing and infrastructure. We don't run top-ups as a profit centre: what you pay covers the AI model usage, the card processing fee, and the infrastructure that serves the answers. Larger bundles carry a slightly better rate per answer because the fixed processing fee is spread further.

Three things worth knowing about top-ups:

  • There is no consumption order. Your monthly allowance and any topped-up answers form a single balance, and an operation draws against the total. Top-ups are not spent "first" or "last".
  • Top-ups share the carry-over ceiling. Because they land in the same balance, buying a large bundle late in a month and spending little of it can put you above the one-month cap at renewal, and the excess is not carried. Buy the bundle that covers what you actually intend to ask.
  • Buying a top-up raises your monthly usage ceiling too. Every account has a monthly limit on AI processing as an abuse safeguard. A top-up lifts that ceiling by the processing your purchase covers, so a bundle you bought is a bundle you can use.

Running out

An operation you cannot afford is refused before it runs. It is never started and cut off partway, and you are never charged for a partial answer.

You can be notified as your balance runs low (AI answers low) and again when it is exhausted (AI answers exhausted). Like every optional notification in Luum, both start switched off. You turn on the ones you want in Settings → Notifications.

While your balance is empty, AI features are unavailable until you top up or your allowance renews. Everything else is unaffected, your dashboard, portfolio analytics, Ticker Scores, performance figures and Tax Centre exports do not consume answers and keep working normally.

The processing ceiling

Separately from your answer balance, every account has a monthly ceiling on how much AI processing it can use. It exists as an abuse safeguard, and it is set high enough that ordinary use does not come close to it, a full monthly allowance of answers uses only a small fraction of it.

If you do reach it, AI features pause until your next renewal, and you will see a message saying so rather than a message about answers. Your answer balance is untouched. Buying a top-up lifts the ceiling straight away, so this cannot stand between you and answers you have paid for.

Refunds

If an AI call fails before producing any output, a network error, or a failure while assembling your data, the reserved answers are returned to your balance automatically.

Once a response has begun, no refund is issued, because the cost of running the model has already been incurred. This is the one case where a failed-feeling result is still charged: an answer that arrives but disappoints is a complete answer.
